Published December 13, 2024

Last week, Taylor Swift wrapped up the finale of her Eras Tour in Vancouver, leaving a significant mark on the local economy. According to data released by the payment processing company Moneris, the city saw an impressive 154% increase in spending during the concert events compared to the previous weeks.

This increase in spending occurred from December 6 to December 8, 2024, and was measured against figures from November 29 to December 1, 2024. Moneris noted that the spending levels approached figures seen during the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010, showcasing the substantial boost brought about by the concerts.

Retail Sales Surge

Retail businesses in downtown Vancouver experienced remarkable sales growth due to the influx of concertgoers. Clothing stores saw a staggering 923% rise in sales, while cosmetics sales increased by 529%. Variety stores also benefited, reporting a 178% increase in sales volumes.

Visitor Spending and Hotels

The data also revealed that foreign spending rose by 97%, with U.S. visitors accounting for 83% of that total. Hotel spending surged by 145% among out-of-town guests, highlighting the impact of Taylor Swift's fans visiting the city.

Food and Restaurant Industry Gains

The food service industry also reaped the rewards of the event, with Moneris reporting a 135% increase in restaurant spending and a 151% rise in fast food sales. This boost in the hospitality sector reflects the increased foot traffic and tourism resulting from the concerts.

Overall Economic Impact

Sean McCormick, vice president of business development at Moneris, commented on the positive effects of the tour: "As the final stop of the Eras Tour wrapped up in Vancouver, it left a remarkable impact on the city’s businesses. The data showed a 154% increase in spending during the three-day event, delivering an economic boost comparable to larger, longer-lasting events.
