BYD Sales Surge in 2024, Challenging Tesla

Published January 3, 2025

Jakarta, Indonesia - BYD has experienced remarkable growth in 2024, achieving vehicle sales of 4.27 million units. This marks a significant increase of 41.3% compared to the 3 million units sold in the previous year. The company is in fierce competition with Tesla, the world's leading battery electric vehicle manufacturer.

According to reports from Carscoops, BYD sold 1,764,992 pure electric vehicles in 2024, a 12% rise from 2023. Additionally, the sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles soared to 2,485,378 units, a substantial increase of 72.8% from the prior year.

December 2024 was a record-breaking month for BYD, with total sales reaching 509,440 vehicles.

In contrast, Tesla's electric vehicle sales for the year totaled 1.79 million units, reflecting a slight decline of about 1.1% from 1.81 million units in 2023. Despite this drop, Tesla’s pure electric vehicle sales remain marginally higher than those of BYD.

Cumulatively, BYD's sales for 2024 are projected to surpass those of established automakers like Ford and Honda, positioning it among the largest car manufacturers globally.

Most of BYD's sales are concentrated in the domestic market of China, although around half a million vehicles are sold internationally, according to a Bloomberg report.

Beyond impressive sales figures, BYD is also recognized as one of the largest battery manufacturers worldwide. As reported by Car News China, BYD is the second-largest battery supplier in China, providing batteries for prominent brands like Toyota, Nio, and even Tesla.
