Published February 3, 2025

TOKYO, Feb 03 - In a significant move for the artificial intelligence landscape, SoftBank Group Chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son has teamed up with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to launch a new AI services company in Japan. The primary goal of this initiative is to foster innovation in enterprise-level AI solutions.

At the launch event, attended by approximately 500 corporate executives, Son presented the company's inaugural service, dubbed "Crystal." He described this service as a groundbreaking AI tool designed to revolutionize business operations. Crystal will utilize corporate data, including human resources information, to offer strategic insights tailored to enhance business efficiency.

Looking ahead, Son proposed the intriguing possibility of AI systems like Crystal eventually taking over critical business functions such as sales. This capability is expected to significantly boost the efficiency and competitive edge of companies that adopt it. He made an analogy to emphasize the potential advantage of using Crystal, likening it to the difference between a "machine gun and a sword." This highlights the profound impact that advanced AI solutions could have on business competitiveness.

This venture is particularly timely as Japan is making efforts to re-establish its position in the AI sector. The involvement of OpenAI underscores the importance of this partnership, with Altman contributing valuable expertise to the initiative. During the launch, he acknowledged the competitive threat posed by DeepSeek, a Chinese company that has developed an AI similar to ChatGPT at a lower price. Altman underscored that while prioritizing AI safety is crucial, a firm commitment to security will facilitate the broader acceptance of AI technologies in the market.

Moreover, OpenAI is actively investigating whether any Chinese firms have unlawfully used its technologies, a reflection of the increasing concerns regarding competition in AI and the protection of intellectual property.

Beyond the launch of Crystal, SoftBank and OpenAI have announced an ambitious collaboration in the United States named "Stargate." This initiative involves a substantial investment of 78 trillion yen and is aimed at promoting large-scale AI research and deployment. Altman anticipates that advancements in AI will lead to rapid breakthroughs, predicting that decades’ worth of scientific discoveries could occur within a single year, and even greater achievements could happen in the span of centuries.

The collaboration between SoftBank and OpenAI marks a significant effort to position Japan as a leader in AI innovation. As AI continues to advance and reshape various industries, the success of this initiative could play a critical role in determining Japan’s competitiveness in an increasingly AI-driven global economy.
