Chula University and ThaiHealth to Foster Economic Vitality with Walkable Cities in Thailand

Published March 23, 2024

Bangkok's urban landscape is set to transform with Chulalongkorn University's (Chula) collaboration with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth). This partnership aims to foster economic revitalization and improve the quality of life for residents by developing 'Walkable Cities' in Thailand. The initiative uses the 'GoodWalk Score' to assess and select pilot areas within Bangkok and beyond for urban development focused on walkability.

Reviving Economies with Walkability

The 'Walkable City' concept emphasizes pedestrian-friendly environments as a core factor in urban planning. By designing neighborhoods that promote walking as a primary mode of transportation, the collaboration seeks to increase economic activity at the street level and provide a boost to local businesses. Walkable neighborhoods are not only anticipated to enhance the vibrancy of city life but are also expected to contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing the reliance on vehicles.

Improving Quality of Life in Urban Spaces

At the heart of the 'Walkable City' initiative is a commitment to improving the well-being of citizens. The creation of walkable areas is believed to have multiple benefits, such as better health outcomes due to increased physical activity and lower stress levels due to the ease of commuting. Furthermore, access to amenities and green spaces is set to increase, furthering the notion of holistic urban living.
