DeepSeek Launches Janus-Pro AI Model Claiming to Outperform Rivals in Image Generation

Published January 28, 2025

DeepSeek, a Chinese start-up, has announced the release of its new open-source AI model, Janus-Pro-7B, which it claims has outperformed competitors like OpenAI and Stability AI in image generation benchmarks. This revelation was detailed in a technical report published on Monday.

According to the report, the Janus-Pro-7B model surpassed OpenAI's renowned Dall-E 3 and Stability AI's Stable Diffusion in performance rankings for generating images from text prompts.

This latest model is an enhancement over DeepSeek's previous version, Janus, which was launched late last year. It follows DeepSeek's successful launch of an assistant based on the DeepSeek-V3 model, which has quickly ascended to being the top-rated free application in the US Apple App Store.

The announcement caused a significant drop in stocks for major tech companies, including Nvidia and Oracle, after DeepSeek indicated that its DeepSeek-V3 model had topped the leaderboard for open-source AI models.

In its technical documentation, DeepSeek explained that Janus-Pro improves upon its predecessor by enhancing training methods, increasing data quality, and expanding the model's size. These improvements have led to better stability in generated images and more intricate detail.

Specifically, Janus-Pro achieved superior visual results by incorporating an additional 72 million high-quality synthetic images, carefully balanced with real-world data, addressing issues of detail and stability.

US Industry Reaction

The Chinese start-up's advancements have prompted commentary indicating that this could serve as a significant alert for the US technology sector, highlighting the competitive progress being made abroad.

Model Specifications

DeepSeek also notes that Janus-Pro has the capability to handle up to seven billion parameters, which aids in greater efficiency in training and enhances accuracy in generating images from text and comprehending tasks.

As of now, both OpenAI and Stability AI have not publicly commented on DeepSeek's claims after the model analysis report was released.
