BYD Surpasses Tesla as World’s Leading Electric Vehicle Seller in Q4 2024

Published January 3, 2025

In a notable shift in the electric vehicle market, Chinese EV powerhouse BYD Co Ltd has once again outpaced Tesla Inc to reclaim its title as the world’s largest seller of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for the fourth quarter of 2024.

Key Developments: On Thursday, Tesla revealed that its deliveries for the final quarter of 2024 totaled 495,570 BEVs. This figure lags behind BYD's impressive sales of 595,413 BEVs during the same period.

Despite BYD taking the lead in the fourth quarter, Tesla has maintained its overall dominance in 2024 by delivering a total of 1,789,226 BEVs throughout the year, thus retaining its title as the leading pure electric vehicle brand for the year. In contrast, BYD's total sales for the year stood at 1,764,992 BEVs, placing it just 24,234 units behind Tesla.

Significance of the Shift: This development marks the second consecutive time BYD has outperformed Tesla in quarterly sales. BYD first eclipsed Tesla in the last quarter of 2023, only to see Tesla reclaim the top spot in the first quarter of 2024, where it held the title for three successive quarters.

2024 has been a challenging year for Tesla, as it recorded its first annual decline in deliveries, with a decrease of 1.1% compared to 2023. The previous year saw Tesla delivering a total of 1,808,581 vehicles worldwide. With a target of at least 514,926 vehicles needed to show growth for the year, Tesla fell short, unable to reach even the 500,000 sales mark in the last quarter.

In contrast, BYD has enjoyed a 12% year-on-year increase in BEV sales, showcasing a positive trend for the Chinese automaker.
