AMD’s Desktop CPU Market Share Rises Sharply

Published November 7, 2024

AMD has seen a substantial increase in its desktop CPU market share, climbing nearly 10 percentage points over the past year. According to a report released on Thursday, this surge is attributed to AMD's successful launch of its latest desktop gaming CPUs.

Mercury Research, a firm that monitors the market shares of PC CPUs from major players like AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm, noted significant gains across most segments of the CPU market. An AMD-specific section of the report was made available to the press and confirmed by Mercury, showcasing the company's impressive performance.

Due to the limited presence of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X CPUs in the market, most of AMD's gains typically come at the expense of Intel’s market share. AMD reported that its desktop market share jumped by 9.6 percentage points from last year, rising to 28.7 percent. Similarly, in the mobile segment, AMD now commands a share of 22.3 percent, reflecting an increase of 2.8 percentage points. Generally, Intel has dominated the market with around 80 percent share, while AMD has held a smaller portion.

In the client processor sector overall, AMD accounted for 23.9 percent of total CPU sales during this period. Within the desktop category, AMD shows strong traction with its Ryzen 7000X, 8000G, and 9000X CPUs, despite mixed reviews for the 9000X series and some performance impacts from post-launch Windows updates. Mercury's findings reflect a year’s worth of sales data, but the outlook appears favorable as AMD has recently released its Ryzen 9000X3D chips. Early reviews suggest that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D varies notably from Intel's offerings.

On the other hand, Intel faces various challenges, including significant layoffs and financial losses reflected in its latest earnings report. Analysts are now scrutinizing Intel's foundry plans, particularly as the company claims it has not yet received any funds from the CHIPS Act to establish new manufacturing facilities in the U.S. There is also speculation regarding potential changes to the CHIPS Act under the incoming administration.

In a segment of the report regarding AMD’s performance in the server market, AMD stated they achieved a record server revenue share of 33.9 percent, calculated based on total spending rather than unit sales. However, it’s important to note that semiconductor products sold for video game consoles and Internet of Things (IoT) devices were not included in this report.
