Elon Musk Plans to Transform SpaceX's Starbase into a City in Texas

Published December 14, 2024

SpaceX is on an ambitious mission to transform its Starbase site located in South Texas into a new city. This development was initiated with a letter sent to local officials where the company expressed its intent to incorporate Starbase as an official city.

Starbase is situated at Boca Chica Beach, which is near the southern tip of Texas and close to the Mexican border. The idea to create a city here is not new; Elon Musk initially proposed it back in 2021 through a social media post that simply stated, "Creating the city of Starbase, Texas." This recent request for an election to incorporate Starbase reflects continuing efforts to expand the SpaceX operations in the area.

Kathryn Lueders, the general manager of Starbase, stated in her letter to Cameron County officials, "To continue growing the workforce necessary to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the ability to grow Starbase as a community. That is why we are requesting that Cameron County call an election to enable the incorporation of Starbase as the newest city in the Rio Grande Valley."

This petition has officially been filed after discussions of incorporation were previously mentioned in 2021. Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. confirmed the submission and mentioned that the county's legal and elections administration will review the petition to ensure that all statutory requirements are met.

Currently, the Starbase site employs over 3,400 full-time workers and contractors, making it a significant hub for SpaceX. However, the company's rapid growth in the region has led to some local opposition. Earlier this year, a group called Save RGV even filed a lawsuit against SpaceX, alleging environmental violations and the improper disposal of polluted water in nearby waters. SpaceX has responded, asserting that a state review found no risks to the environment and dismissing the lawsuit as "frivolous."

The transformation of Starbase into a city could have profound implications for the workforce, local economy, and community in the region. Given Musk's vision for rapid advancements in space travel through SpaceX, this move may significantly contribute to the infrastructure needed to support such ambitious goals.
